Group Home, Constanta

HAO/FVB promoted the development of innovative, new models of care for people with disabilities and in 2001 established the first Group Home for former residents of Negru Voda. The house has a sizable living space and a spacious outside area that includes a wonderful garden and space to keep animals. It offered a service to eight young adults, both male and female. The project has now evolved with many of the people who moved out of Negru Voda, now moving onto more inclusive living options including their own apartments.

Prue Chalker, Research Fellow at the Centre for International Child Care, University College London, carried out a review of the Group Home in June 2005. Below is an extract from her report to the HAO/FVB Boards of Management.

“The Group Home celebrated its third birthday on 1st June 2005. It has been an undoubted success. One only has to spend time in the home with the young people to know this. However, the staff members are not complacent and realise that the work in the home is an evolving process – changing as the needs of the residents change.

Initially the young people needed intensive nurturing and socialisation. The degree of care and skill needed to do this effectively cannot be underestimated. Much credit must go the originator and first project coordinator of the group home.”
